Marketing Levy Bylaws
In the Spring 2023, Marketing Levy Bylaws were passed at the Town of Truro, the Municipality of the County of Colchester, and the Town of Stewiacke. Millbrook First Nation is also an active partner in this regional initiative. The regional Marketing Levy mandates all accommodation providers in the region to collect and remit a 3% levy on all accommodations sold to overnight visitors within Truro, Stewiacke, Millbrook, and Colchester County.
In early February, all accommodation providers in the region were mailed an information package that further outlines the Marketing Levy Bylaw, registration process, and remittance of marketing levy revenues to their respective municipalities. For additional details, including copies of the Marketing Levy Bylaws, interested parties can visit the Town of Truro and Municipality of Colchester's websites at truro.ca and colchester.ca, respectively.
Accommodation providers can also attend an in-person information session hosted in partnership with the Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce, on February 21 at 10:00 am at the Best Western Glengarry. Visit Truro Chamber of Commerce or phone 902-895-6328 to register.
The introduction of the regional Marketing Levy is an initiative to grow the local tourism sector sustainably. It was made possible through the Province's legislation, as outlined in the Municipal Government Act (Bill No. 24), enabling municipalities to introduce such levies. The Municipality of Colchester, the Town of Stewiacke, Millbrook First Nation, and the Town of Truro are proud to embark on this as a collaborative initiative.
As part of this, Colchester, Truro, Stewiacke, and Millbrook First Nation are working together to develop a strategic plan for regional tourism. This strategic planning process is being facilitated through ACOA’s Sustainable Tourism Expansion Program (STEP) and overseen by a steering committee. Stakeholder engagement will take place throughout 2024 with the aim to bolster the local tourism industry.
